Richard “Dick” Wegehaupt BA ’65 received his degree in education and post graduate certification in Special Education in 1969.
Wegehaupt lettered four years in basketball and baseball at Concordia. He was one of just a few men that played on all three 1960s Concordia basketball teams that appeared in the NCAA Regional Tournament. Wegehaupt played the “sixth man” role on the 1962-63 team and finished third with a 9.5 scoring average. He scored 376 points for the 1964-65 team (15.7 average) highlighted by 21 points in the regional game against Southern Illinois University. Wegehaupt also led that team in free throws and assists.
In football, Wegehaupt played two years as defensive back and punt returner. His reputation as “big play” maker included a 52-yard punt touchdown return against St. Procopius and a fourth-quarter interception against Illinois-Chicago. He led the 1964 team in interceptions (4). In baseball, Wegehaupt was a solid contact hitter and strong defensive second baseman contributing to the 1965 team (12-6-1) that won the Chicago College Baseball League tournament. In all, Wegehaupt earned ten Varsity letters.
After graduation, Wegehaupt taught and coached at Hales Corners Lutheran School in Wisconsin playing baseball in a local league as a “ringer." His summer job with an industrial company made participation possible. Wegehaupt then taught and coached at Mayer Lutheran High School in Minnesota. After receiving certification in Special Education, he taught and coached at Waconia Junior/Senior High School.
Wegehaupt taught Sophomore Bible Study and was the treasurer of Faith Lutheran Church during a building program.
