Carlton Stedman, ’54, was a member of the Cougar baseball team (1950-52) and football team (1950, 1952-54). He led the football team in tackles his junior and senior years. Stedman’s baseball career was highlighted by pitching a three-hitter against the University of Chicago in a city tournament of Chicago colleges during his freshman year.

            
After Concordia, Stedman went to Cleveland’s Lutheran East High School where he was an assistant coach in football and basketball from 1958 to 1960. He moved on to take the head football coaching job at Luther South in Chicago. He took over an 0-9 team and, eight years later, earned Coach of the Year honors for fielding a perfect 9-0 team.

            
Stedman went on to receive his master’s in health and physical education from Washington University, St. Louis, his MST in biological science from the University of Missouri, and his doctorate in education from Indiana University. Most recently, he has served over 15 years as the dean for the college of education at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee where he had a conference room dedicated in his name.
