Dennard “Denny” Moore coached the Concordia wrestling team from 1982 until 1988. Moore built up the program from four wrestlers in his first season to 16 the following year. The progression culminated in 1986-87 with the Cougars’ best-ever record of 10-1, finishing second in the NCAA III Regionals and sending two wrestlers to the NCAA National Tournament. In Moore’s six years as head coach, Concordia produced five All-American wrestlers.
Moore joined Northwestern University as assistant coach in 1989. In three seasons, he worked with nine All-Americans and helped the team to a fourth-place finish at the 1991 NCAA national tournament. In 1992, Moore started the program at University of North Carolina – Greensboro. He coached the Spartans nine seasons, leading them to two conference tournaments. Moore earned conference Coach of the Year honors twice.
A native of Robbins, IL, Moore overcame polio to wrestle at Eisenhower High School in Blue Island where he captained the team, earned MVP honors winning conference and district championships his senior year. That summer, Moore won the State Greco Championships and placed second in the freestyle.
Moore wrestled two years at Triton Junior College winning the 1976 regional championship and qualifying for the national tournament. He completed his collegiate career at MacMurray College qualifying for the NCAA national championships, finishing in the top eight twice, and earning his BS in physical education in 1978.
