Athletic Hall of Fame
Janet Fisher, ’76, earned her B.A. from Concordia Teachers’ College and an M.S. from the University of Illinois-Chicago in 1987.
Fisher lettered in four sports, competing in volleyball and basketball for four years, softball for three years, and tennis for one year. She was a three-year captain in basketball and softball, and a two-year captain for volleyball. Fisher’s basketball career included playing on two CIT champions in 1974 and 1975 as well as the AIAW State Basketball Tournament runner-up and the third-place team in the MAIAW Midwest Tournament in 1976.
Upon graduation, Fisher went on to coach and teach at the high school level. Fisher coached basketball at Chicago’s Luther High School North from 1977-87. Her 10-year tenure at Luther North included a 165-70 overall record, six regional titles and an Elite Eight appearance in the Illinois State Tournament in 1987 when her Lady Wildcats finished 27-2. Also in 1987, she was named the Illinois Basketball Association Coach of the Year.
Fisher returned to Concordia in 1989 to serve as the Director of Alumni Relations. In 1991, she became coach of the Cougar women’s basketball and softball teams. She was named Concordia’s Director of Athletics in 1995 and served in that position for the next seven years. Fisher also served on the executive board of the Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference from 2000-03, serving as the NIIC secretary, treasurer and president.
