Greg Bahnfleth ’89 lettered four years (1984-87) for the Cougar football team at linebacker. He was a two-year team captain and anchor of the defense for the 1987 team that went 7-2 and won the Illini-Badger Football Conference championship with a 5-0 record. Bahnfleth held several records upon the conclusion of his collegiate career including most career tackle assists (225) and most total tackles in a season (149). In 1985, Bahnfleth set single-game records for solo tackles (17), tackle assists (18) and total tackles (26).
Team records set during Bahnfleth’s tenure included a 1984 mark of 116.7 rushing yards allowed per game and a single-game record of minus-six rushing yards allowed in a 1987 win over Concordia Wisconsin.
Bahnfleth was voted three times as a first-team All-IBFC linebacker from 1985 to 1987. He was honored as the Cougars’ Most Valuable Player at linebacker in those same three years and was the team’s Defensive hitter of the Year in 1985 and 1987.
Bahnfleth is a certified strength and conditioning specialist for the National Strength and Conditioning Association and has served as a strength coach with Special Olympics. He has also contributed his time and efforts to Augie’s Quest and Clubs for the Cure, both devoted to research and funding towards finding a cure for ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease).
Bahnfleth earned his BS in exercise science. He is currently a field sales representative for Pioneer Athletics.
