Fran (Becker) Koenig graduated from Brown University in 1950. She went on to achieve her master’s degree from Smith University, Northhampton, Massachusetts. She received her doctorate from Michigan State University in 1969.

            
Koenig had a coaching career that spanned 37 years and four different schools. From 1952 to 1959, Koenig coached every women’s sport at Morrisville Central School in Morrisville, New York. She was an assistant professor at Concordia Teachers College while also coaching women’s basketball, field hockey, tennis and volleyball from 1959 to 1964. She also coached field hockey from 1964 to 1968 at Michigan State University while working on her doctorate there.
