River Forest, Ill. — Helping lead your team to an upset win over the No. 2 team in the county is going to draw some much-deserved attention, and D3hoops.com has taken notice of Concordia University Chicago Men's Basketball star Jordan Matthews. The senior has been named to their Team of the Week following a pair of standout performances.
The Chicago native averaged 18.5 PPG last week, including dropping 20 in the win over Wesleyan, perhaps the biggest in the program's history. Matthews was red-hot from the floor, shooting over 50 percent between the games, propelled by a 7-13 effort from beyond the arc.
Matthews was the tone setter out of the gate against Wesleyan, splashing home a three for the first points of the game. He went on to score 11 points in the first ten minutes of action, helping the Cougars keep pace and show the Titans they weren't going to be an easy out.
Out of the half, with the Cougars facing their largest deficit of the game (six), Matthews again broke the ice with a three-point shot to avoid letting the game slip out of reach. The team would go on to score the first eight points of the second half to retake the lead.
He was equally crucial during overtime, tying the game at 70 and delivering the Cougars their first lead of the period a few possessions later.
In addition to the scoring, Matthews was second on the team with four assists.
"Jordan has been spearheading the team's effort all year, and he's stepped up his game in all areas," Head Coach Steve Kollar said. "The way he has been taking care of the ball lately and how efficient he has been offensively has taken us to another level. He's a winner and does whatever needs to be done. Our entire group is selfless and willing to do whatever it takes, and we pride ourselves on that."
This is just the second time the program has had a player earn D3hoops.com Team of the Week honors (Mitch Pelissier in 2018-19).
