Scott Gwyn hired as head men's lacrosse coach

Scott Gwyn will start as the head men's lacrosse coach on July 26.

Concordia University Chicago Athletics is pleased to announce that Scott Gwyn will begin as the new head coach of our men's lacrosse team.

"I am excited to announce Scott Gwyn will be our new men's lacrosse coach," said Director of Athletics Pete Gnan. "Scott was highly recommended to us from high school and college lacrosse coaches. Scott comes to us from a coaching family, where his father has coached for many years in Maryland. He has a strong Christian faith and believes in developing young men to be successful after college. I believe his coaching philosophy and his calm demeanor will be great qualities to lead our program. We are excited for the future of men's lacrosse at CUC."

Gwyn had an outstanding career as a student-athlete at Wheeling University, a Division II school in the Mountain East Conference. The long stick midfielder from Sykesville, Md., played in all 52 games during his time as a Cardinal, starting in 46 of them. He finished his career in West Virginia by earning All-Great Midwest Athletic Conference second team honors after a standout senior season. He finished in the top 25 in Division II in caused turnovers per game (12th) and ground balls per game (25th). He ended his career with a total of 186 ground balls and 68 caused turnovers. With these statistics, Gwyn made a permanent mark on the GMAC as he is third in the record books for the most ground balls during his senior season.

Prior to his time at Wheeling, Gwyn played lacrosse at Westminster High School in Maryland. There, he was a three-year starter that helped his team to two county championships and one state championship. He also earned first team all-conference and first team all-county honors twice, second team all-county honors once, Player of the Year honors and was named a Brine All-American.

Along with his extensive playing experience and accolades, Gwyn volunteered as a lacrosse coach at Shaler Area High School in Pittsburgh, where he helped the team to its best league finish since 2010.

"I'm excited to come to Concordia to be a part of a program that is in a great community," Gwyn said. "The University really cares about developing this team as students and athletes, and I am excited to be a part of that. The group of guys that are already a part of this program have great character and want to be successful. I look forward to being part of this tight-knit community here at CUC."

Gwyn received his master's degree in international affairs and national security policy studies from the University of Pittsburgh and a bachelor's degree in political science, government and English from Wheeling University. He will start this new role on July 26.
