First road game to Aurora leads to loss for Cougars

The Concordia University Chicago football team lost 49-13 to Aurora.

Box Score It was truly a game of distinct quarters between the Concordia University Chicago football team (0-2) and the Aurora University Spartans (2-0) on Saturday afternoon at Vago Field in Aurora. The Cougars led after the first, with the game closely balanced at halftime. Then, the Spartans had a third quarter offensive explosion to seal the game with a 49-6 loss for CUC.

The Cougars struck first, finishing off their opening drive of the game with a field goal Nicholas Pasut (New Boston, Mich.) from 37 yards. It was Pasut's first career field goal and the first three points scored by the Cougars this season. Pasut bookended the first half scoring, connecting on a second field goal late in the second quarter. However, Aurora made two touchdowns to make it a 14-6 game at the break.

Concordia also scored their first touchdown of the season on a 20-yard pass from freshman Parker Kelley (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) to sophomore wide receiver Tyeray McKinney (Hazelwood, Mo.). In his career debut, Kelley completed six of eight passes for 62 yards and the score. Kelley relieved junior Jordan Sepulveda (Lake Worth, Fla.), who himself completed 16 passes for 153 yards.

Junior wide receiver and running back Semaj James (Lakeland, Fla.) turned in another strong performance as a versatile offensive weapon, combining for 165 total yards on nine receptions and 13 carries.

At the end of the game, CUC pitched a defensive shutout in the first and fourth quarters as well as the final 14 minutes of the second. Junior defensive back Earl MacIntyre (Smithville, Texas) led the Cougars with six total tackles, while fellow junior defensive back Julian Sierras picked off the Spartans' quarterback Gavin Zimbelman twice. Seniors Nate Bailey (Naperville, Ill.) and Mark Hogan (Anchorage, Alaska) also contributed five tackles each. Finally, there was a personal moment to remember for freshman defensive end Martin Egbo (Williamsburg, Va.), who recorded his first collegiate sack.

With his 267 passing yards, Zimbelman eclipsed 7,000 total passing yards for his career as he led the Spartans to their 13th consecutive Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference victory.

The Cougars return home to Concordia Stadium next weekend to face Eureka College, with kickoff scheduled for noon on Saturday, April 3rd.
