Two teams with identical records will look to close out the 2018 season on a high note and head into the offseason with an eye on a better 2019.
The Concordia Cougars (2-7, 1-5 NACC) and Benedictine Eagles (2-7, 2-4 NACC) will meet Saturday for the 81st time in history. Though not a continuous series, it was first contested in 1924 when Concordia was in only its second season of intercollegiate football. The Eagles hold a 47-29 advantage with four ties. Benedictine has won the last five meetings, with CUC's last victory in the series going back to the playoff season of 2012.
Lance Moise will look to put a bow on what is already his biggest season as a CUC Cougar. Despite an injury in the third quarter of the Oct. 6 game that cost him the next two games as well, Moise has racked up 1,350 yards, with his 192.9 average giving him an outside chance at
Khyree Copeland's 2010 season record of 1,566 yards. The junior will also have a fair shot in 2019 at Copeland's career record of 3.957 yards, as Moise enters Saturday's game already second place on CUC's all-time list with 3,087 yards.
When Benedictine has the football, keep an eye on wide receiver Brandon Moore. The Eagles' leading receiver has 47 catches for 664 yards, but Moore had a career day last Saturday against Aurora with a school-record 18 catches for 158 yards and a touchdown. Most of Moore's receptions came from Tyler Jarnagin, who was 31-40 passing for 281 yards.
Saturday's clash will feature the top two tacklers in the NACC. Benedictine's Scottie Bobeck is currently at 10.7 per game, and he jas been an impactful players in the Eagles' defense with three interceptions, two fumble recoveries and a forced fumble all to his credit. Right behind Bobeck is CUC's Rudy Payan at 10.2 per game, along with two fumble recoveries. Other defensive players to watch are BenU's Jack Drummond, one of the NACC's sack leaders with 6.5 on the year, and CUC's
Caleb Casey, who has moved into the top 15 in conference, thanks in part to a 11-tackle effort two weeks ago against Rockford that earned him the Student-Athlete of the Week honor on defense for Oct. 22-28.
