Following a much-needed 41-13 victory last Saturday, the Concordia-Chicago Cougars will go after their second straight victory and third of the season when they play the Wisconsin Lutheran Warriors at Raabe Stadium in Milwaukee on Saturday afternoon. The contest will be CUC's final road action of the 2018 season.
Besides adding another win to the 2018 ledger, the Cougars that were on last year's team should have a little extra motivation. Last year's battle, also at Raabe Stadium, saw the Cougars take a 27-26 lead on
Tylor Martens' run midway through the fourth quarter. Victory seemed assured after a sack and fumble recovery by CUC's
Kenneth Catron in the final minute. It appeared as if the Cougars would run out the clock, but WLC got the ball back with five seconds left - time enough to kick a 39-yard field goal and give CUC its most heartbreaking loss of the 2017 season.
While last year's game may be the most notorious, the Cougars will want some revenge for the series in general. Wisconsin Lutheran has won the last five meetings and leads the overall series 7-3. In addition, the Cougars will be looking for just their second win in six tries at Raabe Stadium.
The Cougars will come into this game with some good momentum builders from last Saturday's game.
Lance Moise returned to the lineup after missing the previous two games, and he ran 16 times for 128 yards and two touchdowns. While Moise's absence did cost him the top spot among all Division III runners, the junior is still fifth in the country with 1191 yards and second in yards per game with 198.5. By the way, Moise made an impact in last year's game at WLC, rushing 18 times for 168 yards.
Jordan Sepulveda got the start at quarterback last week, and he will be building on a big game. His first pass of the day went for 80 yards to
Da'Nas Pinellas for a touchdown, and Sepulveda scored two more TDs himself on runs of 19 and two yards. Sepulveda finished 9-12 for 170 yards, and
Griffin Beaudette added 6-7 for 56 yards, giving CUC a potent, two-pronged passing attack.
The defense and special teams also had their moments in the sun against Rockford. On defense, safety
Caleb Casey earned NACC Football (Defense) Student-Athlete of the Week honors for his 11 tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery.
Demetrius Rufus made six tackles, three pass break-ups and literally had a hand in both of Casey's takeaways, deflecting the football on the interception and knocking the ball loose for Casey to recover. On special teams,
Orlando Hayes not only went 5-5 on extra points and 2-2 on field goals (34, 23 yards) but also punted three times for 96 yards, including a long of 42 yards.
Wisconsin Lutheran enters play tomorrow with a 1-7 record. The Warriors won their opening conference game against Rockford but have since lost four straight. Offensively, WLC has a veteran quarterback in Patrick Mathieson, who has thrown for 1305 yards and 16 TDs versus seven interceptions. His top three receivers - Chrystyan Woyak, Javion Morgan and Nick Charles-Crowl - are all averaging between 14 and 15 yards per catch and have accounted for 10 of the team's 19 TD receptions.
On defense, the Warriors are led by the Styczynski brothers - linebacker Joe has 54 tackles (32-22) and defensive back Jody has 44 (32-12). In addition, lineman Cameron Wolf is among the NACC leaders with 9.5 tackles for losses totaling 19 yards.Â
