Feb. 26, 2016 - The waiting is the hardest part, as Tom Petty once sang. But what was once just an idea of adding lacrosse as an intercollegiate sport became a reality and now has come to fruition for Concordia University Chicago. The Cougars' women's lacrosse game will play its first intercollegiate contest on Saturday afternoon when they welcome Alma College to Concordia Stadium for a noon contest.
The excitement around the River Forest campus is palpable but, according to CUC head coach
Brian Patterson, "No one is more excited than my team. Of course, there is nervousness involved as well, but that's only natural. We realize that this is a historic event for the university, and we're ready to face the opposition and get this season underway."
Patterson's first roster consists of 18 players, many of whom are new to the sport. But with the instruction of Patterson and assistant coach
Liz Blake, not to mention the time and commitment from the players, the head coach states that "this truly came out better than I had hoped. Some of our players do have backgrounds in other sports, and that has helped with the learning process in many instances. Overall, I think we will be a very competitive side that is capable of surprising a few teams along the way, and I hope our fans will enjoy watching us compete."
Saturday's match versus Alma will be the first of six home matches. Coverage of the match will be provided through
live stats and the
live CUC videostream."
