Directions to all road competitionsOct. 3, 2014 - As we get into the thick of the conference seasons, our fall teams have some big contests coming up this weekend. Here 's a quick primer for all of you Cougar fans that want to cheer on your favorite teams:
The lone home action of the weekend comes Saturday night at 6:00 when our volleyball team tangles with MSOE. However, head coach
Troy Campbell's squad has a little preliminary road business to attend to on Friday night with a match at Concordia Wisconsin. The Cougars will head into the weekend on the momentum of a four-set win at Rockford this past Tuesday. In that match,
Kaylyn Anderson knocked down 26 kills (two short of her season-high), and
Austin Thompson recorded her season-high of 14 kills. The Cougars are now 1-1 in the NACC and the rest of the schedule is all conference play with the exception of a tri-match at Illinois Wesleyan later this month.Â
Cougar football is also traveling north to take on Concordia Wisconsin with kickoff scheduled for 1:00 on Saturday. Head coach
Randy Awrey and the Cougars are coming off an unplanned bye week with last week's game against Maranatha Baptist being cancelled, but they enter play looking for their first victory in three tries after a tough 24-21 loss to Alma back on Sept. 20. In that game, CUC freshman
Tyson Burch earned NACC Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week honors with nine tackles and an interception return for a touchdown.
Ryan Fischbach passed for 193 yards including a 28-yard TD strike to
Elijah Walker, and
Brent O'Halloran scored on an eight-yard run.
The Cougars and Falcons had quite a game last year here in River Forest with CUW holding off a late CUC rally to win 48-42. Fischbach threw for 316 yards that afternoon with four TD passes including a 48-yarder to Walker. The Falcons got top performances from QB Austin Damaschke (380 passing yards) and WR Garrett Wenzelburger (11 catches, 129 yards), and the Cougars' defense will have the goal of limiting their effectiveness in tomorrow's game.
Our CUC soccer teams travel to Marian for a doubleheader, and both men and women enter play with the momentum of mid-week wins on their side. The Cougar women aim for a 3-0 week after wins over Alverno (4-1) on Tuesday and Mount Mary (7-0) on Wednesday. Head coach
Thomas Goines' team will have some added incentive as it was Marian that ended the CUC women's season last year in the first round of the conference tournament. Currently, the Cougars are just 1-3 in the NACC standings (7-4 overall), but a win tomorrow will allow them to tie Marian in the standings and most likely leapfrog Benedictine.
The men's soccer team comes in having won two of their last three - a 4-3 win over Aurora on Sept. 24 that gave head coach
Micah Middendorf's squad their first conference win, and a 2-1 non-conference win over Beloit this past Wednesday. In the Beloit match,
Johnson Lui and
Ricardo Aragon each scored their first goals in a CUC uniform, and
Jorge Guzman and the defenders held off a late rally by the Bucs to improve to 4-3-2 overall. The CUC men are currently tied for sixth place in the NACC standings with a 1-2 record, one-half game above Marian.
The cross-country teams will travel to a familiar course tomorrow, Greenfield Park in West Allis, WI, to take part in the Wisconsin Lutheran Warrior Invitational. The story of head coach
Dave Risch's teams in recent weeks has been the ability of several runners to step up their efforts in the wake of some injured teammates. Last week, the women were bolstered by the efforts of freshman
Danielle McCormick and junior transfer
Miriama Kisiel recording top 5K times at the DuPage Invitational. In that same meet, senior
Christian Rodriguez turned in one of the top performances of his career and finished second among the men's scorers. "We're happy with the progress our team is making with the intent of maximizing our performances by the time we get to the conference meet in four weeks," says Risch.
