Floyd's 29 Sends Cougar Men Out with a Victory

Box Score
Feb. 12, 2013 - The Concordia-Chicago men's basketball team celebrated Senior Night with a 84-68 win over Wisconsin Lutheran College tonight at Geiseman Gymnasium. The win let the Cougars head into the offseason winning two of their final three games to finish at 4-21 (4-12 Northern Athletics Conference). Concordia also played the role of spoiler to the hilt as their win coupled with Benedictine University's win eliminated the Warriors (9-16, 6-10 NAC) from qualifying for the conference tournament.
Before the game, the Cougars honored their three seniors - Khirey Floyd (Oak Park, IL/Oak Park-River Forest), David Baez (Chicago, IL/George Washington) and Aurtiro Houston (Chicago, IL/Crane). While all three started the game and made contributions to the win, it was Floyd that led the way from the opening tip. Floyd scored the Cougars' first eight points and went on to post a career-high 29 points. The 6'4" forward's previous high game came back on Jan. 25 against Concordia University Nebraska when he scored 26, and he finished the season with a 13.0 scoring average overall, 20.3 in the final seven games.
The Cougars never trailed in the game. Houston's basket snapped an 8-8 tie, and a tip-in by Marcus Elston (Chicago, IL/Benito Juarez) and layup by Floyd boosted the lead to 14-8. The Warriors stayed close for a while as Kyle Stelse (13 points) provided a spark off the bench. However, with Concordia's lead at 20-17, fast-break buckets by Tyler Oden (Chicago, IL/Marist) and Brandon Stinson (Schiller Park, IL/East Leyden) put the lead at seven. Concordia kept the momentum rolling with threes by Elston and Baez to take the lead up to 16 before two baskets by the Warriors closed the half, Concordia leading by a 38-26 score.
Wisconsin Lutheran made its push in the first four minutes of the second half. The Warriors outscored the Cougars 11-3 with Nate Bauer's three cutting the home team's lead to 41-37. But Floyd split a pair of free throws and Baez hit a baseline jumper to extend the lead back to seven. Minutes later, Floyd drilled a pair of threes to put Concordia's lead at 11 with 11:49 remaining.
The Warriors had one more run in them with Tim Demuth leading thhe charge. Demuth, who was uncharacteristically cold from three-point range tonight, attacked the lane for three baskets, the third turning into a three-point play. Concordia's lead was down to five points at 64-59, but Floyd came to the rescue one more time. Floyd scored on the next two possessions for a nine-point lead. The Warriors broke the run momentarily with another bucket by Demuth, but Joe Pearson (Chicago, IL/St. Francis de Sales) stepped forward to help put the game on ice. Pearson scored eight of the Cougars' next 10 points highlighted by a three. Joel Kosberg (Anthem, AZ/Valley Lutheran) added a pair of free throws following a Warriors' technical foul. The 12-0 run gave Concordia a 19-point lead with three minutes left, effectively ending the visitors' chances.
Floyd shot 10-16 from the field, 4-5 from threes and 5-6 from the free throw line for his career-topping performance. Pearson was next in line with 14 points (4-6 FG, 1-1 3FG, 5-6 FT), and Elston added 11 points and 11 rebounds. Baez recorded six points, four rebounds and three assists in his final game while Houston had two points and three rebounds.
Wisconsin Lutheran was led by Demuth's 19 points, followed by Brett Lubbe's 14 points and seven rebounds. The Warriors shot 25-63 overall but just 3-23 from three-point range. Concordia shot 51 percent on 29 of 57, 8-16 from three-point land.
