Jan. 26, 2013 - The Cougar men's basketball team concluded a weekend of competiton against the two NAIA teams in the Concordia Invitational Tournament with Saturday's 90-71 loss to Concordia Ann Arbor.
Following a tough four-point loss Friday night to Concordia Nebraska, the Cougars looked for a fast start on Saturday.
Taylor Rawlings (Rochester Hills, MI/Stoney Creek) hit his first two shots, and
Brandon Stinson's (Schiller Park, IL/East Leyden) jumper gave the Cougars an 8-3 lead. The Cardinals bounced back quickly to take a 21-14 lead, but the Cougars retaliated with a 7-0 run.
Brandon Johnson's (Chicago, IL/Gordon Tech) jumper tied the game 21-21 with 6:28 remaining in the half.
Chatavius Turner's three-point play put the Cardinals back into the lead moments later. Johnson scored again to bring the Cougars back within a point, but Turner hit two three-pointers and scored eight of CUAA's next 10 points for a 34-26 lead. John Schaeffer closed the half with a long three, and the Cardinals led 39-30 at halftime.
The Cougars looked to cut into the lead at the start of the second half.
David Baez (Chicago, IL/George Washington) and
Khirey Floyd (Oak Park, IL/Oak Park-River Forest) connected from long range. However, Schaeffer was up to the challenge as he hit triples over the first six minutes in helping CUAA extend their lead to 15 points.
Tyler Oden's (Chicago, IL/Marist) jumper midway through the half struck the deficit down to 10 points at 66-56, but the Cardinals scored the next six points. With the help of 57 percent shooting in the half and 12-14 free throw shooting, the Cardinals would keep their lead in the upper teens for most of the remainder of the game.
Schaeffer's 21 points (5-11 three-point shooting) led four Ann Arbor players in double figures. Floyd led the Cougars with 18 points, giving him a total of 44 points for the two CIT games.
Concordia-Chicago returns to Northern Athletics Conference action Tuesday night when they play at Rockford College. The Cougars will go for a season sweep against the Regents following a 66-63 victory back on Jan. 17.
