Jan. 15, 2013 - Looking to avenge a four-point loss from early in the season, the Concordia Cougar men's basketball team traveled to Lisle this evening to rematch with Benedictine University. However, a hot-shooting Benedictine team took control of the game early and rolled to a 78-47 win.
The Eagles jumped out to a 14-4 lead. Tim McGinty, whose lone three of the game burned the Cougars back in December, hit his first two attempts from behind the arc. Khirey Floyd (Oak Park, IL/Oak Park-River Forest) scored the Cougars' points, but Concordia missed on eight of their first nine shots from the field.
Midway through the half, Concordia began to chip away at the deficit which had been as high as 16 points. Cole Reindl (Germantown, WI/H.S.) hit a long three from the left side, and Tyler Oden (Chicago, IL/Marist) hit a spinning three in the line. When Joe Pearson (Chicago, IL/St. Francis de Sales) knocked in a pair of free throws, the Cougars were within 25-15 and appeared to have the momentum.
Just as quickly, the Eagles restored their lead to the upper teens. Alexc Edmondson hit a three from the top of the key, and guard Jamison Montgomery gave the hosts a spark with 4-5 shooting from the field. Benedictine would take a 21- point lead into the locker room as Dale Renshaw's jumper beat the halftime buzzer for a 40-19 lead.
Concordia scored the first five points of the second half, three coming on Floyd's second trey of the game. But Benedictine found its rhythm and scored 17 of the game's next 19 points. Raphael Oglesby scored six of the 17 inside, and Montgomery hit from outside the arc to contribute to the run. The Cougars would be unable to recover from that as they shot just 7-21 in the second half and finished 13-45 for 29 percent.
Floyd was Concordia's only player in double figures with 5-9 from the field and 15 points total. Oden shot 4-7 and finished with nine points. Benedictine, who shot 31-52 (60 percent) overall and 8-15 (53 percent) on threes, was led by Montgomery and McGinty with 12 points each.
The Cougars will return to Geiseman Gymnasium Thursday night when they host Rockford College.
