Sept. 19, 2012 - The Concordia-Chicago women's soccer team went up against conference powerhouse Aurora University this afternoon at AU's Vago Field. The Cougars frustrated the home team for much of the day, but the Spartans broke through with three goals in a 20-minute span of the second half to claim a 3-1 victory and remain unbeaten on the season (7-0-1). Concordia fell to 2-3 on the year, 0-3 in the Northern Athletics Conference.
Sophomore Callie Hasselbring (Houston, TX/Cypress Ridge) was the story of the first half for the Cougars. With much of the half played in the Cougars' end of the field, Aurora fired 11 shots at the Concordia goal, but Hasselbring made six saves to keep the game scoreless.
The Spartans stepped up the attack in the second half and broke through in the 63rd minute on Raquel Rodriguez's tally. Aurora doubled its lead five minutes later as a cross from Marian Ziegenbein was headed in by Debbie McLaughlin.
The score became 3-0 in the 81st minute as a blocked shot found its way to Aurora's Brittany Roydhouse who fired past Hasselbring into the net.
Concordia kept battling and did get a small consolation in an 86th minute goal
. Maggie Kucek (Oak Forest, IL/H.S.) passed to
Hillary Campbell (Dyer, IN/Lake Central), and the freshman forward unleashed a rocket from about 25 yards out that found the upper right corner of the net past Spartans' keeper Liz Wong.
The Cougars will return home to host NAC opponent Marian University on Friday afternoon.
