RIVER FOREST, Ill. – On a beautiful Sunday at Concordia Stadium, the Concordia University Chicago (CUC) women's soccer team clinched a spot in the NACC playoffs by defeating Marian University, 2-0. First Half
- After a few minutes to settle in, Espinoza got a shot off and earned a corner kick for the Cougars. Unfortunately, the Cougars couldn't capitalize.
- Strong defense from CUC limited the Sabres' opportunities and kept the Cougars mostly in their offensive half.
- E. Flores put the first shot on frame in the 34th minute and Maskery forced a save from Marian's goalkeeper in the 38th minute, as the Cougars knocked on the door.
- Their persistence paid off in the 42nd minute. After earning a free kick, Hirayama stepped up and took it, beautifully placing the ball into the box. The ball found Espinoza, who headed it into the back of the next for a 1-0 lead.
- Naomi Gonzales (Santa Rosa, Calif.) made a save at the end of the half to keep the Sabres scoreless.
Second Half
- The Cougars continued their momentum into the second half. Gonzales made two saves before CUC was able to make their way back into their offensive zone. Sofia Cazares (Rockford, Ill.) nearly put the ball into the net, but the Sabres were able to scramble and keep it out.
- CUC looked to be the better side, maintaining most of the possession and keeping the ball forward.
- In the 75th minute, Maskery took an opportunity for herself, but had it saved by Marian's goalkeeper.
- Urbanczyk tried her luck twice in the final nine minutes but had her shots denied as well.
- Finally, in the 83rd minute, E. Flores was able to sneak one by Marian's goalkeeper to double the lead and secure the victory.
