Box Score
Oct. 3, 2012 - Concordia-Chicago's women's soccer team looked to extend its winning streak to three this afternoon as they hosted Division Street rival Dominican University. The Cougars came into the game having scored six goals in the last two wins, but the Stars blanketed the Cougar attackers for much of the day and came away with a 3-0 victory.
Dominican gained control of the match in the early going, and their pressure paid off with the game's first goal in the 15th minute.
Callie Hasselbring (Houston, TX/Cypress Ridge) made a diving save of Kelly Petty's shot, but the ball came out to Jen Russ on the left side moments later. Russ hit a long cross into the box, and Leah Tednes got space between two defenders to redirect the ball past Hasselbring.
Less than three minutes remained until halftime when the Stars scored a crucial second goal on a corner kick. Nathalie Mathis' cross from the right curled to the far post from where Petty headed it solidly into the net.
Midway through the second half, the Cougars began to press the attack deeper into the Stars' zone but were unable to produce a goal.
Alex Wilson's (Round Lake, IL/Grayslake Central) low shot to the far post was smothered by Stars' keeper Sara Stepanovich. Later on,
Maggie Kucek (Oak Forest, IL/H.S.) hit a hard shot that Stepanovich stopped but could not control. The ball trickled to the left, but a follow by
Wendy Sotelo (Chicago, IL/DeLaSalle)b missed wide.
The Stars finally iced the game in the 82nd minute. Concordia was whistled for a foul in the box, and Petty drilled the penalty kick past Hasselbring for her second of the match.
Dominican finished with a 16-10 advantage in shots. Stepanovich was credited with seven saves while Hasselbring recorded five.
The Cougars (4-5-0, 2-5-0 NAC) will play at Edgewood College in Madison, Wisconsin on Saturday morning at 11 :00.
