Non-Conference Clash with Knights Ends in Defeat for Cougars

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) men's volleyball team competed on his home court tonight, welcoming the Knights of Calvin University. The Cougars kept each set close, but ultimately fell in three sets. CUC is now 2-6.

Inside the Box Score
  • Tyler Holubek (New Lenox, Ill.) led the Cougars with nine kills.
  • Elijah Mosher (Clayton, Ohio) recorded team-highs of 27 assists and nine digs.
  • Alexander Ford (Skokie, Ill.) totaled a team-high four blocks.

Set One
After going back-and-forth for the first few points, kills from Holubek and Marcin Hoffman (Inverness, Ill.) helped the Cougars tie the game at seven all. Then, a block from Hoffman and Leon Gudzovski (Des Plaines, Ill.) put the Cougars ahead to take a 9-7 lead.

The Knights were quick to come back and tie up the game, 12-12. Holubek, Ford, and Mosher each registered kills as Calvin closed in. The Knights tied the set four more times, making it 20-20.

Calvin was able to hold CUC to just one more point in the set and win, 25-21. Calvin led the match 1-0.

Set Two
In set two, Hoffman served up an ace to get things rolling for the Cougars.

Back-to-back kills from Jackson Stella (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) and Ford, along with a block from Ford and Holubek gave the Cougars a slight 5-4 lead. The teams traded points before the Cougars were able to go on a small run of three unanswered points. Stella spiked down a kill before combining with Ford for a block to take a 12-9 lead.

Holubek, Hoffman, and Stella, along with some Knights' errors helped keep the Cougars in the lead. However, Calvin would stay in the match and tie the set up at 21-21. Ford secured the next two points for the Cougars to go up 23-21.

The Cougars got to set point, but the Knights were able to deny Concordia and take the set 28-26. The Knights now led 2-0.

Set Three
CUC went out to an early 5-3 lead in the final set. Stella and Holubek registered back-to-back kills in the run, and Holubek and Ford recorded a block.

Ford and Holubek each secured another kill, but the Knights were able to come back and take a 14-9 lead. Tyrise Armstrong (Grayslake, Ill.) snapped Calvin's 5-0 run.

However, the Knights seemingly maintained the lead. The Cougars made their comeback, going on a two 3-0 runs with kills from Ford and Tristan Caminar (Bolingbrook, Ill.) to get within two, 21-19.

Unfortunately for the Cougars, they were limited in the final points of the set and fell 25-20, with the Knights taking the match 3-0.
