Cougars Fall in Close Battle with Titans

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) men's volleyball team stayed on the road this week, facing Illinois Wesleyan. The Cougars made it a match, keeping the score close in each set, but the Titans walked away with a 3-0 victory. CUC is now 2-5.

Inside the Box Score Set One
Hoffman nabbed the first point of the night, spurring the Cougars to open the set with a 6-3 lead.

However, the Titans fought back to tie the game at 10-10. Stella regained the lead for the Cougars, but it was short lived, as the Titans went on a 5-1 run to take the lead.

The teams traded points before each went on short runs, where Gudzovski tied the set at 20-20.

Unfortunately, the Titans found their rhythm and limited the Cougars in the closing moments of the first set, winning 25-22, and taking a one set lead.

Set Two
It was once again the Cougars who struck first with a kill by Stella and a block by Gudzovski and Holubek. Gudzovski and Holubek would then each tally a kill to take a slight 4-2 lead.

A few errors from Illinois Wesleyan and kills from Ford and Gudzovski, kept the Cougars in the lead. Yet the Titans battled back and tied the set at 9-9. Both teams battled hard, each grabbing points to keep the set deadlocked. At 18-18, Mosher and Gudzovski got up for an important block and Stella tallied another kill to go up 21-18.

CUC was limited to just two more points in the set and fell 25-23. Illinois Wesleyan now led 2-0.

Set Three
The final set saw the Titans take an early 6-3 lead. Ford and Hoffman cut into the gap and helped the Cougars get within one, 8-7.

However, that would be the closest CUC would come to the lead. The Titans continued to build upon their lead, scoring two points for every Cougar point. Concordia bounced back near the end of the set, going on a 3-0 run with kills from Holubek and Armstrong. A block from Ford and Holubek put the Cougars within two, 22-20.

Sadly, the Cougars couldn't overcome the deficit and fell, 25-21. Illinois Wesleyan swept the match 3-0.
