Cougars Take Down Regents In Their House

ROCKFORD, ILL. — As the Concordia University Chicago (CUC) men's volleyball team has entered deep into Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play, they take on another conference opponent. Traveling to Rockford University, the Cougars took on the Regents and dominated them in a 3-0 win.

Inside the Box Score:

  • Tyler Holubek (New Lenox, Ill.) led the offense with 13 kills and two aces

  • Also totaling two aces was Elijah Mosher (Clayton, Ohio), he also led with 27 assists

  • Colby Campbell (Brookfield, Ill.) led the way in total blocks with five

Rockford came out with a huge burst of energy to start this matchup and quickly went up 7-3 in set one. The Cougars were chipping away at the lead all the way up until the end of set one. Jose Padron (Rockford, Ill.) was able to pick up a stellar kill and Campbell had a service ace, still behind 7-6. After a run of Regents points, the Cougars took advantage of some mistakes and Luke Vozenilek (Westmont, Ill.) got in a kill to come up to 14-12, still behind.

Finally, the Cougars were able to take the lead after blocks from Padron and Andrej Moller (Naperville, Ill.) and a service ace from Holubek, bringing it to 18-17. CUC then went on a trailblazing run to finish set one and scored the next six points in a row to win 25-21.

After set one, the Cougars gained the momentum and kept it the rest of the game. Mosher and Campbell brought out a huge block and helped bring the Cougars ahead 4-1. Vozenilek joined the block party and brought the Cougars up to 7-2. As the Cougars played on, both Holubek, Campbell, and Vozenilek supplied some kills of their own and brought the lead up to 16-8.

Continuing set two, the Cougars took advantage of more Rockford mistakes and Holubek picked up his second ace of the day. Bringing the score to 22-11, the Cougars were using their power to keep the lead steadily ahead. Set two is finished off with a Campbell block and CUC takes this set with a score of 25-15.

Heading into set three, Padron picked up back-to-back kills and the Cougars led in the third set 7-4. Padron then picked up a service ace and gave the opportunity for Holubek to get another kill, that lead extended to 10-6. It was clear for set three that the Cougars were down to business. They went on a five-point rally, a highlight being Mosher's back-to-back aces, and brought their lead to 17-8.

As the Cougars pulled away with the win, Matthew Lams (Brookfield, Ill.) picked up a kill for himself to bring the score to 20-10. To finish off set three, Vladimir Erickson (Batavia, Ill.) smacked down a kill, Mosher got one for himself, and Vozenilek sealed the deal with a score of 25-13. The Cougars took over the Regents with a final score of 3-0.
