River Forest, Ill.. -- Coming off their hot win at home against Lakeland on Friday, the Concordia University Chicago men's volleyball team (2-9, 1-2 NACC) headed down the street to take on number three Dominican University. In a close match, the Cougars fell 3-0 by a deficit of 11 points total.
Early in the first set, it became a battle of serving as both teams grabbed early service errors. Blocks from
Colby Campbell (Brookfield, Ill.),
Tyler Holubek (New Lenox, Ill.), and
David Vales (Oak Forest, Ill.) kept the Cougars fighting, as they ultimately fell 25-19.
In set two, the Cougars jumped ahead after a Dominican service error. Maintaining a back and forth scoring system, a kill from
Virgilio Rodriguez (Cicero, Ill.) put the Cougars back in front 20-19. Following Rodriguez's go ahead point, the Stars went on a 6-0 run to take the set 25-20.
As the third set progressed, the Cougars continued to fight defensively block after block. A kill from
Luke Vozenilek (Westmont, Ill.) accompanied by a Rodriguez dig gave the Cougars momentum to make a run. Holubek grabbed a massive block to even the score while he slammed the ball down the line on the next play to take the lead. In the end, the Cougars' service errors overpowered their defensive efforts and Dominican pulled ahead to win the third set 25-20, sweeping the night 3-0.
The Cougars take the court again on Thursday where they head over to Palos Heights to take on Trinity Christian College at 7pm.
