Box Score Concordia University Chicago Women's Soccer played host to No. 15 University of Chicago on Wednesday, Sept. 8, falling 12-0 to the visiting Maroons.
It was the first opportunity of the season for goalkeeper Morgan Simms (Winter Springs, Fla.), who was able to save three shots in 26 minutes of action. Starting goalkeeper Kassie Silenzi (Carpentersville, Ill.) added five saves of her own. Silenzi provided the play of the day for CUC with a diving save during the first half.
The lone shot for CUC was produced by Itzel Calderon (Oak Lawn, Ill.) in the 50th minuteb as the team struggled to muster offensive attacks.
The Cougar's defense played a relatively sound game despite the constant attack of the Maroon offense with the ball being in CUC's defensive zone for 80 percent of the game.
That defensive fight was persistent throughout the game, never quitting and battling until the final seconds. Taking away the own goal as well as the goal in the 88th minute that initially appeared to be called off due to offsides, the Cougars allowed just three goals in the second half. They limited Chicago to just nine shot attempts in the final 45 minutes.
The team will be back in action at home on Saturday when they take on North Park University. Kick-off is scheduled for noon and a stream to the game will be available on the CUC Athletics YouTube channel.
