Defense helps Cougars sweep Scarlet Hawks

The Concordia University Chicago men's volleyball team won 3-0 against the Illinois Institute of Technology.

Box Score The Concordia University Chicago men's volleyball team (2-2) was back on the road as they took on the Illinois Institute of Technology Scarlet Hawks (0-4). After just three sets, the Cougars came out with the win to put them at .500 on the season.

All three sets were close between the two teams. In the first, CUC was down by three with the score at 17-20. But once the Cougars took a timeout, they regrouped and took the first set 25-22. The second set told a similar story, with the Scarlet Hawks grabbing the lead with the score at 23-20. It took a service run from freshman David Vales (Oak Forest, Ill.) and strong defensive efforts to propel the Cougars forward as they won the second set 25-23. The third set told a different story as Concordia held the lead the whole time. Although IIT tried to make a comeback towards the end, they were unsuccessful as CUC won the third and final set 25-20.

Leading the night for the Cougars was none other than sophomore Luke Vozenilek (Westmont, Ill.). The outside hitter recorded a season-high 17 kills. He also assisted the team's defensive efforts with three blocks and six digs. Senior Ryan Felbinger (Cicero, Ill.) commanded the front row on offense as he hit an impressive .692 (9 kills, 0 errors, 13 attempts) and on defense as he added three blocks.

Junior Virgilio Rodriguez (Cicero, Ill.) also helped the team as he registered nine kills of his own. This is the first game Rodriguez started at the pin. Senior Trent Weber (Carol Stream, Ill.) returned to the lineup as the team's sole setter, controlling the offense with 35 assists while also contributing on defense with seven digs. In the back row, defensive specialist Christopher Livesay (Medinah, Ill.) had the most digs on the team with 11.

The Cougars will be back in action again this Friday, March 5, as they return to Geiseman Gymnasium. They will take on Dominican University in the Division Street Rivalry. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. A live stream can be found at youtube.com/cucsports.
