Chicago Ill. - The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) men's volleyball team made the short trip to Chicago, Ill. to face off against the Scarlet Hawks of the Illinois Institute of Technology. After a tense battle, the Scarlet Hawks beat out the Cougars 3-2.

Here's What Happened
Set One
The Scarlet Hawks quickly gained the lead after errors from the Cougars. A kill from
Tate Johnson (Plainfield, Ill.) earned the ball back. This was countered with kills and an ace from the Scarlet Hawks, giving them a four-point advantage. Ford tried to halt the Scarlet Hawks' run with a kill, along with one from
Marcin Hoffman (Inverness, Ill.), but their opponents kept coming. Attacks from Ford and
Tyrise Armstrong (Grayslake, Ill.) ate away at the growing lead. The Cougars fell back into a five-point deficit. The Scarlet Hawks capitalized on the Cougars' consistent errors; Ford and Armstrong continued to hammer out attacks, but the Scarlet Hawks remained in the lead by seven points. The point gap jumped to 10 as the Scarlet Hawks got to set point first. The Cougars continued to fight back as Stella delivered a kill and Gudzovski got an ace. The Scarlet Hawks got a kill in and took set one with a score of 25-18, going into the second set, 1-0.

Set Two
The Scarlet Hawks took on the first point of the set. Kills from Gudzovski and Stella, along with an error from a Scarlet Hawk, put the Cougars in the lead for the first time in the match. The Scarlet Hawks slowly caught up with the Cougars, even with attacks from Ford and Stella. The Scarlet Hawks took the lead from the Cougars, but a kill from
Elijah Mosher (Clayton, Ohio) tied the teams up. The Cougars kept catching up with the Scarlet Hawks, an attack from Gudzovski not letting them get too far. The Scarlet Hawks continued to lead by three but kills from Ford and Johnson put them on their tails. The Cougars fell back into a four-point disadvantage. Attacks from Gudzovski and Armstrong would shorten the points gap as the Scarlet Hawks broke 20. The Cougars kept biting back as the Scarlet Hawks reached set point; the Cougars came in with an attack, putting themselves within two, but ultimately, the Scarlet Hawks would take the set with a score of 25-22, going into the third set in the lead, 2-0.

Set Three
Armstrong grabbed the first point of the set with a kill. The Scarlet Hawks took the lead with errors from the Cougars. Armstrong continued to power back with kills, keeping the Cougars in view of the Scarlet Hawks. The teams exchanged points for a period of time; Hoffman and Gudzovski delivered kills - combining those with errors from the Scarlet Hawks brought the lead back to the Cougars. The Scarlet Hawks quickly came back after some kills, but the Cougars continued to resist with kills of their own from Gudzovski and Stella. Kills from Stella brought the Cougars back into the lead, giving them a three-point advantage. Continuous errors and attacks from Stella built the Cougar lead to five. The Cougars were the first to hit 20, keeping the Scarlet Hawks down by six points. The Cougars got to set point first, their blocks from Gudzovski, Stella and Armstrong proving to be impressive. The Cougars took the third set with a score of 25-15 and went into the fourth set down, 2-1.

The Scarlet Hawks gained the first point of the set, grabbing the lead early on with another point. The teams exchanged points as Mosher and Stella smacked down kills. Attacks from Ford and Mosher kept the Scarlet Hawks at bay. An ace from
Ildeu Damasceno (Pompano Beach, Fla.) kept the Cougars on the rise. Errors from the Scarlet Hawks had put the Cougars at a seven-point advantage, the tables turning. The Scarlet Hawks continued to fall as the Cougars broke 20 after kills from Hoffman and errors. The Cougars took the fourth set with a score of 25-17, both teams going into the final set, 2-2.

Set Five
The Scarlet Hawks took the first point with a kill, but the Cougars grabbed the next point after an error from the Scarlet Hawks. After some attacks, the Scarlet Hawks took the lead, putting the Cougars in a three-point deficit. Stella tried to hit back, getting in some kills. A kill from Hoffman put the Cougars right behind the Scarlet Hawks. The Scarlet Hawks had gotten the eighth point, causing the teams to switch sides; they proceeded to take on the lead once more. An ace from Hoffman tied the teams up, 10-10. The Scarlet Hawks took the lead, but attacks from Stella and Armstrong kept the fight going as their opponents reached match point. An ace from the Scarlet Hawks sealed the deal. The Scarlet Hawks took the fifth and final set with a score of 15-12, beating out the Cougars 3-2.
