Cougars Hold Off Sabres

Fond du Lac, WI- Concordia University Chicago (12-3; 1-1 NACC) traveled up north to take on Marian University (6-8; 0-3 NACC). CUC was coming off of their first ever NACC win in the program's young history. Meanwhile, the Sabres were itching to get into the conference win column. The Cougars would notch their second consecutive NACC win and improve to 2-1 in the conference (25-23, 24-26, 25-22, 25-15).
 
Turning Point- Set three turned into a deciding set. With the score 20-13 the Sabres started their comeback but would fall short 25-22.
 
Inside the Box Score:
  • Concordia-Chicago registered double digit kills in every set. 
  • Luke Vozenilek (24) was one of three players that recorded double digit kills (Virgilio Rodriguez, Brian Perez).
  • Rodriguez led the way with 14 digs, followed by Brandon Stirn (11), Trent Weber (10), and Perez (10).
  • Weber also added 51 assists.
  • Despite good hitting percentages in the first two sets, Marian sputtered to under .200 in the last two sets. 
 
 
Quick Recap:
  • A Skylar Versendaal kill helped the Cougars lead 3-1 in set one.
  • The score would go back and forth all the way until the end, never getting outside of two-point leads.
  •  Vozenilek would play as the closer and finish the set on a kill, CUC took set one 25-23.
  • Set two saw the Cougars get up 15-10 after a bad Sabre set. 
  • Marian would not stay behind for long, and tied it up at 23-23.
  • The Sabres snuck out of set two 26-24 and tied up the match.
  • CUC jumped out to another lead in set three.
  • A Vozenilek kill pushed the Cougars out to 9-5 but once again Marian responded.
  • Concordia-Chicago started to widen the margin again and after three straight Vozenilek kills made it 20-13.
  • Despite another late run, Rodriguez ended set three with a  kill 25-22.
  • Set four did not see as many runs by the Sabres and after strong play CUC ran away with it 25-15. 
 
Up Next: Concordia University Chicago will travel to face off against Lakeland University on Saturday, March 7th, at 1:00 p.m.
