March 7, 2020 - The Concordia-Chicago men's volleyball team completed a very successful week with this afternoon's 25-16, 25-18 and 25-18 win over Lakeland University in Plymouth, WI. The win closed out a perfect 3-0 week over three conference rivals and allowed the Cougars to improve to 3-1 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play, 14-3 overall.
TURNING POINT:
It appeared as if the Cougars would battle back and forth with the Muskies after going four sets with Marian University last night. But, with the Cougars trailing 15-14 in the first set, CUC reeled off seven straight points and would take control for the rest of the afternoon.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Luke Vozenilek hooked the Muskies with 20 kills in 44 attempts today, marking the fifth time this year he has recorded 20 or more kills in a match.
- Brian Perez added five kills in 11 errorless attempts for a .455 attack.
- Trent Weber handed out 28 assists while leading the defense with 14 digs.
- Â The Cougars hit .256 for the day, including a sparkling .435 (11-1-23) in set two. Conversely, the Muskies hurt their own cause with 20 attack errors and managed only a collective .058.
QUICK RECAP:
- The Cougars and Muskies matched points in the early going, with set one featuring nine ties.
- Weber served up the go-ahead run in the first set with Vozenilek smashing five of his kills during the run.
- A quick start in set two saw CUC take a 5-1 lead, highlighted by a Skylar Versendaal kill and an ace by Weber.
- A 4-0 run late in the set helped the Cougars to their 2-0 lead in the match, with Perez and Ryan Felbinger contributing kills.
- Â The Muskies tried to stay alive in set three, but kills by Felbinger and Perez gave CUC the lead for good.
- Â Lakeland fought back to within a point, but a kill by Vozenilek and ace by Perez helped the Cougars pull away, and they would complete the sweep moments later.
UP NEXT: The Cougars will have a well deserved break before they resume play on Friday, March 20 when they host Benedictine University at Geiseman Gymnasium. The Benedictine match will be the first of three matches on the home floor that weekend. Â
