Cougars Split Day at Home

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – Looking to build off of their win last night, the Concordia University Chicago Men's Volleyball team took the floor for two matches today to close out the opening weekend. CUC would drop a hard fought five set match to Graceland 3-2, but would rebound to down Trine 3-1.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORES
  • Virgilio Rodriguez had a big all-around day for CUC. He totaled 23 kills, 11 digs and four aces in the two matches.
  • Luke Vozenilek came alive in the second match. He totaled 17 kills and a .303 attack percentage.
  • Trent Weber totaled 52 assists in the two matches.
  • As a team CUC totaled 15 blocks and 13 aces in the two matches.
 
GAME ONE QUICK RECAP
  • CUC went on a 5-1 run early in set one with two aces by Matthew Geiser to grab an early lead
  • The Yellowjackets went on a 8-2 run to open up a lead late in the set and took set one 25-18.
  • The Cougars used an early run to grab a 7-5 lead in set two.
  • A 5-1 run opened up a 17-12 lead in set two, with Tyler Houlbek capping off the run.
  • Graceland pulled even at 23, but a Houlbek kill helped CUC seal the set 25-23.
  • The Yellowjackets dominated set three and took a 2-1 lead by taking the set 25-13.
  • With Christopher Livesay serving CUC was able to erase a deficit and take a lead midway through set four.
  • The teams battled into extra points, but a kill by Virgilio Rodriguez and a block by Rodriguez and Ricardo Ruiz helped to take an intense set four 30-28.
  • CUC took the first three points of set five but Graceland answered with four of their own.
  • The Cougars held the lead at 12-10 late in the set, but the Yellowjackets scored five of the last six points to take set five 15-13.
 
GAME TWO QUICK RECAP
  • The two teams shared points through the early going. Trine then went on an 8-1 run to open up a 15-9 lead.
  • CUC pulled as close as 20-18 on a Houlbek and Ryan Felbinger block, but Trine was able to hold off the Cougars in set one 25-21.
  • CUC hit a monstrous .381 in set two.
  • Leading by three CUC went on a 7-1 run with Livesay serving once again to open up a 19-12 lead.
  • CUC scored the final four points of the set, taking set two 25-14.
  • The two sides battled close through the early points of set three.
  • CUC opened up a lead with a 3-0  run with the game tied at 18.
  • A Houlbek ace sealed set three 25-22.
  • CUC got out to a fast start offensively in set four which propelled them to a 10-5 lead.
  • Vozenilek extended the CUC lead to 14-7 with three straight kills from Weber.
  • The Cougars scored the final five points of the match, getting two aces from Rodriguez and kills by Felbinger and Vozenilek.  
 
UP NEXT
  • The Cougars (2-1; 0-0) will have 10 days off before their next match. They will head to Naperville to take on North Central at 7:00pm on January 28.
