April 26, 2019 - Two local rivals went at it on the courts this afternoon as the Concordia-Chicago Cougars hosted the Dominican Stars. The rivalry resulted in some gutsy efforts, but the Stars would prevail in this one by a final score of 9-0.
In doubles play, the first team of
Orlando Hayes and
Peter Rios, and the second team of
Trey Dille and
Andrew Rodriguez both fell by scores of 8-4. The Stars led 3-0 after the Cougars defaulted at third doubles.
Two of the four singles matches played were decided in third-set tiebreakers. Dille and Joshua Sapnu battled at fourth singles, with Dille taking set one 6-3 and Sapnu set two 6-2. A marathon third set followed, with Sapnu finally outlasting Dille 13-11.
The other three-set match came at second, the final match on the court. CUC's
Peter Rios took set one 7-5, but DU's Antonio Morales came back for a 6-3 win in set two. The tiebreaker was played close to the vest, and Rios was within 8-7 before Morales got the final two points of the day.
The other singles matches saw Alexander Tobias beat Hayes 6-3, 6-0 at first, and Brandon Pineda down Rodriguez 6-1, 6-2.
Concordia-Chicago finished the season 0-9, 0-5 in NACC play.
