Hot Start Vultured by Vikings

Box Score Aurora, Ill.- Concordia-Chicago (4-20; 0-14 NACC) took on game two versus Augustana College (11-13; 4-3 CCIW) in their final match of the day. CUC would steal set one and continue to battle with the Vikings. Unfortunately, they would drop the following three sets and fall 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 19-25, 22-25). 

Inside the Box Score:
•    Nick Capers (16) led the team in kills followed by Virgilio Rodriguez (12), and Matthew Geiser. (12)
•    Geiser (20) and Rodriguez (17) also paced the Cougars in assists. 
•    Although they dropped three out of four sets, the point differential was a tight 72-65.

    In the first set Concordia-Chicago climbed ahead early and helped themselves to a late lead. Back and forth action controlled the first portion of the set, but a 4-0 run forced Augie to call a timeout down 18-14. CUC would be the first team to reach 20 and from there they would take the set one 25-23. 
   

Concordia-Chicago would continue their tough play in set two. Despite falling behind 6-2 early, CUC fought back and took their first lead after a Rodriguez kill made the score 9-8. 
   

The Cougars would fall behind again 16-14 after a series of Augustana kills forced them to play catch-up. They never got back into the lead and would drop a close set two 25-22. 

CUC started the third set off battling for the 2-1 match lead. Augustana came out firing and steadily grew a lead. After a Viking kill, Concordia-Chicago was forced to call a timeout down 13-7. The lead would grow to 18-10. A Geiser kill, and a couple of huge Ryan Felbinger blocks helped the Cougars cut the deficit to 19-14. Augie reapplied pressure and forced CUC into a timeout trailing 22-14. Despite the comeback effort, Concordia-Chicago would drop set three and fall behind 2-1. 
   

Set four was a grind for the Cougars. Augustana held the highest lead (3) for the entire set and climbed away with set four by a score of 25-22. 

Concordia-Chicago will return to action against Milwaukee School of Engineering on Friday, April 5th, at 7:00 p.m.
