April 29, 2017 - The Concordia-Chicago men's tennis season ended today as it began, as the Cougars went indoors to escape the anticipated inclement weather. Unfortunately for the team, the season also ended with losses to Edgewood College and Marian University.
The Cougars hosted Edgewood on Friday night, and the Eagles were too tough as they rolled to a 9-0 victory. CUC found points at a premium, as
Ariel Manjarrez, Josh Krzyzanowski and
Ben Fluga were the only ones to take points during their battles at first, third and fifth respectively.  In doubles, the Eagles blanked the Cougars at first and second while winning third doubles in a default.
An early wake-up call was set for both CUC and Marian as the two teams commenced play on Saturday at 7 a.m. In doubles, the third team of Fluga and
Ryan Popowcer put up a battle before falling to Brandon Ruis and Ryan Biffert 8-4.Â
In singles play, Manjarrez won the final match of his career at first, defeating Joey Dittman -6, 6-4, 7-6 (11-9). Unfortunately, senior
Alex Vieaux could not pull out a final victory, although he improved in the second set against Patrick Schwoerer before going down by 0-6, 3-6 scores.
The Cougars finished with a record of 1-12, 1-7 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference. "It was a rough year, but I can say that our players are better now than they were at the beginning of the season," said CUC head coach
Howard Carley. "Our guys that return will be better for having had this year of experience, and we should have some new faces with good tennis backgrounds that will help our cause."
