Men's Tennis Drops Fourth Straight in Conference Play

April 20, 2017  The Concordia-Chicago men's tennis team hit the road for the final time this season as they met the Aurora University Spartans in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match this afternoon at West Aurora High School. The Cougars got some gritty efforts from their seniors at the top of the rotation, but it was not enough to stave off a 9-0 loss to the Spartans.

The first doubles team of Ariel Manjarrez and Alex Vieaux put forth arguably the most competitive match of the season against Aurora's tandem of Jake Lipka and David Dobrose, but the Spartans' pair emerged victorious in the end by a score of 8-5.

In singles play, Vieaux went to another three-set match at second flight. He defeated Robert Salerno 6-4 in the first set, but Salerno came back to even it up by an identical 6-4 score and then defeated Vieaux in the tiebreaker 10-4.

Manjarrez was pitted against Dobrose at first singles. That match was also played close to the vest for much of the way, but Dobrose held off a good challenge from Manjarrez in winning 6-4 and 6-2. At fifth singles, CUC's Ben Fluga took some points from his opponent, but AU's Patrick McDonald won the battle by scores of 6-2 and 6-1,

The Cougars will return home to host local rival Dominican University at 4:00 on Friday. This match will be contested as part of the River Forest Rivalry Cup, sponsored by Northwestern Mutual. Concordia-Chicago currently leads in points 50-40, and a victory by the Cougars will lock up the cup for CUC.
