April 30, 2016 - The Concordia-Chicago men's tennis season came to a close today with consecutive 9-0 losses to the Milwaukee School of Engineering and Wisconsin Lutheran College. The matches were played indoors at the Oak Brook Tennis Center, as the teams successfully avoided the day-long rain in the Chicagoland area.
The first match against MSOE was played without the Cougars' number one singles and doubles playerÂ
Ariel Manjarrez (Berwyn, IL/Morton West), who had an earlier commitment.Â
Alex Vieaux (Park Forest, IL/Illinois Lutheran)Â stepped up to the number one slot, followed byÂ
Niko Vercelletto (Babylon, NY/West Babylon), Mark Knight (Lyons, IL/Morton West)Â andÂ
Parker Lloyd (Sandy, UT/Hillcrest), The closest singles match came at fourth where Austin Fite defeated Lloyd 6-3 and 6-2.
The doubles pairings for the MSOE match were Vieaux and Vercelletto at first, and Knight and Floyd at second. Both of CUC's tandems lost by scores of 8-0.
Manjarrez returned for the late afternoon match as the Cougars hosted the Warriors of Wisconsin Lutheran. Manjarrez won the opening set of first singles, 6-2 over Derek Sallmann, but Sallmann came back to take the next two sets, 6-1 and 6-4. Lloyd played another tough set, this time at fifth, but Ryan Eastman prevailed by scores of 6-2 and 6-4.
In doubles play, Manjarrez teamed with Vercelletto for the first time this season, but they lost 0-8 to Sallmann and Zach Birner. Knight and Lloyd lost 3-8 to WLC's second team of Ben Wordell and Cedric Guichard,
The Cougars finished the season 1-9 overall, 1-7 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference. Vercelletto will be the lone CUC player lost to graduation.Â
