Men's Tennis Falls in Conference Openers

April 4, 2015 – The Cougars hosted two NACC conference opponents in men's tennis on Saturday. The morning match  came against Lakeland College, which resulted in a nail-biting 5-4 loss. The Cougars faced Concordia Wisconsin in the afternoon and lost 8-1 in continued cool and windy conditions.

The early match versus Lakeland started well for the Cougars as the first doubles team of  Clinton Bienz (Fort Wayne, IN/Concordia Lutheran) and Patrick McIntosh (Tulsa, OK/Tulsa Memorial) and the third doubles team of Andrew Menke (Pflugerville, TX/H.S.) and Niko Vercelletto (Babylon, NY/West Babylon) both won to give CUC a 2-1 lead in the early going. In the singles matches, the top two singles in Bienz and Ariel Manjarrez (Berwyn, IL/Morton West) both prevailed, leaving the match knotted at four apiece going into the final contest at number six singles position. Menke battled all the way to a third set, but ultimately lost a 4-6, 6-4, 4-6 final match that extended into the afternoon.

In the 2 p.m. match, the Cougars' numbers two doubles team consisting of Manjarrez & Alex Vieaux (Park Forest, IL/Illinois Lutheran) won the lone point for CUC with an 8-6 score line. The number three doubles team of Menke & Vercelletto battled to a tough 5-8 defeat. In the singles competition, it was a battle as three matches went to tie breaks. Bienz lost his tie break 7-10, Manjarrez was downed 9-11, and again Andrew Menke extended his singles match, but ultimately succumbed 2-10.

Concordia-Chicago returns to the court next Saturday in continued NACC action. They host Edgewood and Marian at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. respectively in River Forest.
