Box Score Sep. 13, 2014 – Concordia University Chicago men's soccer endured a long day on Saturday with a lengthy bus ride to Jacksonville, Illinois and 120 minutes of soccer. In the end, the Cougars took a point home with a 2-2 draw in their second overtime game of the new season.
"It was great weather for a soccer match today, and we started to put together stretches of good play," said head coach
Micah Middendorf. "However, it is tough when we don't close out games when we have the lead. We have less than 24 hours till our next match and don't want to play unnecessary minutes."
Both teams were well matched in the first half with a slight edge to the Cougars. In the 19
th minute, the ball eluded a slide tackle and
Aaron Garza (East Chicago, IL/Bishop Noll) picked it up on the right side and played a low cross through the six yard box that avoided the goalkeeper and was redirected in by an IC player for an own goal and a 1-0 Cougar lead. As the half wore on, the Cougars had stretches of good possession and did well switching the point of attack.
In the second half, Illinois College was able to dribble in the box, and a shot was deflected in to tie up the game in the 64th minute. Concordia-Chicago responded just six minutes later as
Pedro Barrera (Cicero, IL/Morton East) went one on one with the keeper and won the battle to put CUC back ahead.
The back-and-forth game continued as, three minutes later, the Blue Boys conjured a Rory Delap style throw in to the center of the box that was headed into the net to tie the game. In overtime, both teams created several good chances but were unable to finish as the game ended in a draw.
The Cougars (2-0-1) have a quick turnaround as they host Franklin College on Sunday at 1:00 in River Forest.
