April 19, 2014 – Concordia University Chicago hosted two Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opponents in men's tennis on Saturday. It was a rough day for the Cougars as they lost 9-0 to the Milwaukee School of Engineering and 8-1 to Wisconsin Lutheran College. The Cougars are now 3-4 on the season.
Head coach
Terry Farrell said, "The weather was exemplary for tennis today. Unfortunately, we ran into a couple of buzzsaws today that made it difficult. I am proud of the way the guys battled all the way to the end."
In the morning match versus MSOE, the Cougars fought hard throughout, and their tenacity carried over to the afternoon net donnybrook. The fighting spirit was exemplified in the afternoon match against WLC by sophomore
Chris Auger (Bad Axe, MI/H.S.) who finished his sixth singles match 30 minutes after the rest of the team, battling through a tiebreak to heartbreak. Auger won the first set 6-2 before Austin Wagenknecht evened things with a 9-7 second set. This led to a third-set tiebreaker which finally went to Wagenknecht by a 10-7 score.
The tense singles' battle came after the third doubles team of Auger and
Zach Eddins (Hickory, NC/St. Stephen) won their match 8-5 for CUC's lone point. Eddins also battled his fifth singles match to a tie break, but unfortunately it was not to be as Adam Breister won that battle 6-4, 3-6, 10-6.
Concordia returns to the court for a pair of road matches next Saturday, April 26 at Lakeland College and Concordia University Wisconsin.
