April 15, 2014 - Conditions at the Forest Park Tennis Courts on Tuesday were less than ideal with temperatures hovering in the upper 30s. However, the Concordia Cougars brought the heat and came away with a 7-2 win over the Dominican Stars in the latest battle for River Forest bragging rights.
The Cougars took immediate control of the match in doubles play. The first team of
Ariel Manjarrez (Berwyn, IL/Morton West) and
Clinton Bienz (Fort Wayne, IN/Concordia Lutheran) nipped Kevin Amarantos and Krystian Drozdz 9-8 with the match being decided on a 7-5 final game. In second doubles,
Alex Vieaux(Park Forest, IL/Illinois Lutheran) and
Patrick McIntosh (Tulsa, OK/Tulsa Memorial) defeated Alex Dee and Chandler Allen 8-4. The Stars defaulted the third doubles match, giving the Cougars a 3-0 advantage prior to singles play.
Concordia-Chicago gained an easy point with a default at sixth singles, leaving them needing just one point to win the match. The Cougars got more than they needed with wins at flights two, four and five. Bienz went three sets with Drozdz at second but prevailed 7-5, 4-6 and 10-6. McIntosh won 6-3, 6-2 over Allen at fourth, and
Niko Vercelletto (Babylon, NY/West Babylon) improved to 3-1 at fifth with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Will Foley.
The Cougars (3-2, 3-2 NACC) return to action on Saturday with a pair of home matches against the Milwaukee School of Engineering and Wisconsin Lutheran College.
