Oct. 4, 2014 - Coming off a sweep at the hands of Concordia Wisconsin on Friday night, the Concordia-Chicago Cougars returned to Geiseman Gymnasium to welcome the Raiders of the Milwaukee School of Engineering for a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference prime-time Saturday night special. The Cougars and the Raiders played it close from start to finish tonight, but the visitors made the big plays down the stretch in every set to take away the 25-19, 26-24, 25-22 victory.
In set one, the Cougars got a solid contribution from
Raven Burns (Shorewood, IL/Minooka) who went a perfect 4-4 in kill opportunities. But the Raiders took control in the middle of the set, getting a kill from setter Abby Born and consecutive serving aces by Sarabeth Haworth to take a 14-10 lead. Haworth added a kill later on as MSOE took its largest lead at 21-14 en route to closing out the first-set win.
Set two saw CUC take an early lead behind the serving of
Austin Thompson (Morris, IL/Morris Community), but MSOE's Rachel Lynde answered by serving four straight points for a 7-6 lead. The Raiders held the lead for much of the set but, with their advantage standing at 22-18, kills by
Anna Kellar (Collinsville, IL/Metro-East Lutheran) and
Kaylyn Anderson (East Chicago, IN/Whiting) gave CUC some momentum. Moments later, Burns and
Olivia Friedrichs (San Diego, CA/Clairemont) teamed up on a block to tie the score at 23-23. However, MSOE would stem the tide right here and score three of the final four points in the set to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Cougars were down but not out, and they started set three by taking another early lead. Once again, the Raiders answered back with a run of points, but CUC refused to concede. Instead,
Jackie Bartnicki (Chicago, IL/Guerin Prep) served up six consecutive points midway through the set as the Cougars took a 17-13 lead.
CUC held the lead over the next several minutes, and a kill by Bartnicki made the score Cougars 22, Raiders 20. But the visitors had the last laugh as they scored five consecutive points, the last two coming on kills from Maria Bintz and Kasey Mylin to close out MSOE's sweep.
The Raiders (7-9, 2-2 NACC)Â hit .226 for the match on the strength of 40 kills. Bintz led MSOE with 13 kills and a .375 attack while Lynde finished with nine kills against just one error for a .348.
The Cougars (4-16, 1-3 NACC) hit .209 on 34 kills. They were led by Anderson's 10 kills and 10 digs. Thompson finished with eight kills and seven digs.
CUC returns to action Friday night with a match at Wisconsin Lutheran College in Milwaukee.
