Sept. 28, 2013 - The Concordia-Chicago men's soccer team returned home after a couple of road losses to top Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference contenders. The Cougars hoped that the familar surroundings and the prospect of six of the next seven matches at home would help against another formidable foe in the Milwaukee School of Engineering. While Concordia put up a tough battle against the visitors, two goals in the final half-hour gave the MSOE Raiders a 3-1 victory over the Cougars.
The Raiders looked to establish their offense early behind the NACC's leading scorer Logan Andryk. The first-half shot total read 16-5 in favor of the Raiders but, in fact, it was the Cougars that had the best chances. Anthony Giammanco (Bartlett, IL/South Elgin) hit a rocket from the left wing that just missed over the crossbar, Later, Michael Amezcua (Cicero, IL/Morton East) hit a crackling volley that beat the keeper but unfortunately caromed off the post.
Concordia's third chance finally found the back of the net. On a restart, Dylan Pavlisin (Villa Park, CA/Orange Lutheran) served up a beautiful ball in front of the goal. MSOE goalkeeper Garrett Farin was ready to grab the ball, but DeAndre McLaurin (Joliet, IL/Joliet West) got to the ball a split-second quicker. The ball hit the crossbar, but Kyle Bergmann (Bloomingdale, IL/Lake Park) was on the doorstep to put the ball in before the Raiders could clear. The goal was Bergmann's first of the year in just his second game back from injury, and it gave the Cougars the lead in the 38th minute.
MSOE changed tactics at halftime, pulling Andryk back into the midfield while other Raiders pushed forward. That resulted in the tying goal in the 52nd minute when a low cross from the left side found Gerardo Rubio at the post. He was in perfect position to redirect the ball into the net for a 1-1 score.
The Raiders continued to press, and they would take the lead in the 67th minute. A foul just inside the box resulted in a penalty kick. Andryk was chosen to take the kick, and his shot was on target , high and to the left side of the net.
Dominic Ridolfi gave the visitors the insurance tally six minutes later. A low cross from the left side slipped through a maze of players to Ridolfi who fired low to the right side.
MSOE finished with a 35-10 advantage in shots. Concordia netminder Roberto Aragon (Cicero, IL/Morton East) made a career-high 14 saves to keep the Cougars in the chase.
The Cougars (3-7-0, 0-3-0) will host Marian University next Friday afternoon as part of Concordia's Homecoming Weekend.
