Box Score Sept. 21, 2013 – The Concordia University Chicago men's soccer team traveled to Madison, Wisconsin to play their first Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference foe of the season, Edgewood College, on Saturday. Head coach
Micah Middendorf said, "Edgewood is a good introduction to the physicality necessary to play in the NACC. It is a test for us to see how we are doing at this point of the season." Unfortunately, it was the host Edgewood team that aced the test as they defeated Concordia by a 3-1 final score.
As predicted the game started off as a physical midfield battle with low shot totals through the entire match. The pressure of CUC resulted in the first break through as sophomore
Taylor Nehmer (Milwaukee, WI/Milwaukee Lutheran) capitalized on an Edgewood possession error caused by CUC's pressure defense in the 25
th minute to put the Cougars ahead.
As the half drew to a close the Cougars were again putting pressure on their opponent. A free kick landed in the Edgewood box but was cleared out leading to a breakaway and a score by Stephen Gilbert. This tied things up at 1-1 at the half.
The physical play continued in the second half as the foul count totaled 17. Edgewood was able to exert a little more pressure, which unfortunately resulted in a penalty kick from a handball call as a CUC defender was all alone in the box controlling a ball. Kelmend Isaj converted from the spot in the 76th minute to give the hosts the lead.
Edgewood also counter attacked at the end of the game as CUC sent players forward to try and equalize, and Gilbert notched his second of the match with less than five minutes remaining.
Middendorf remarked after the match, "We created some good chances, but at the end of the day they just finished more chances than we did."
Goalkeeper
Roberto Aragon (Cicero, IL/Morton East) had four saves in the match.
The Cougars will be away on Wednesday at Aurora University to continue the conference slate.
