May 30, 2013 – For the fifth consecutive season, a member of Concordia University Chicago's baseball team has earned a national Gold Glove award synonymous with outstanding defensive play. This year, shortstop
Robert Weis (Oak Creek, WI – H.S.) has earned the coveted award from the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA). Previous recipients have been first baseman
Brandon Isaac (2009, 2010) and centerfielder
Shawn Miller (2011, 2012).
Weis, a four-year infielder and three-year starter for the past two seasons, anchored the Cougars' defense with a sparkling .963 fielding percentage. He fielded 231 of 240 chances successfully with 68 putouts and 163 assists. Weis took part in 32 of the Cougars' 46 double plays.
“In my mind,
Robert Weis is one of the best defensive shortstops in the country,” said
Adam Smith, Concordia-Chicago head baseball coach. “I'm happy that this award recognizes his excellence as well. Any balls hit in his vicinity, we knew that with his range and his arm he would make the play.”
Weis' first two seasons with the Cougars saw him play at third base and second base. He became a starter in 2011 moving back and forth between the two positions before settling in to an everyday role at shortstop in 2012 where he has been a fixture for the past two seasons. “Robert came a long way from his freshman year to this point, and that is a tribute to his work ethic and coachability,” said Smith. “This is truly a well-deserved award, and we could not be any prouder of him.”
