April 27, 2013 - The Concordia-Chicago men's tennis team returned to the home courts today for its final two matches of the season. A 7-2 win over Lakeland College and 9-0 loss to Concordia University Wisconsin left the Cougars with a final mark of 4-6 overall, 3-6 in the Northern Athletics Conference.
The morning match began with the Cougars taking two of the three doubles matches against the Lakeland Muskies.
Clinton Bienz (Fort Wayne, IN/Concordia Academy) and
Chayanne Martinez (Carpentersville, IL/Dundee-Crown) 8-3 at first over Chris Meyer and Paul Elzinga. Thie third team of
Patrick McIntosh (Tulsa, OK/Tulsa Memorial) and
Matt Gruenwald (Evansville, IN/Harrison) battled to an 8-5 win over Brandon Robinson and Carlos Rodriguez. However, another 8-5 score went to Lakeland in the second doubles match as Greg Boknevitz and Jake Halverson topped
Tim Staffeld (Hobart, IN/H.S.) and
Jose Landa (Round Lake, IL/H.S.).
Singles play was highlighted by two flights going to third-set tiebreakers. One of those went to the Cougars as Landa defeated Elzinga at fourth by 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2). The Muskies' Robinson took the other one at fifth, defeating McIntosh by 7-5, 0-6 and 7-6 (7-4).
The remaining matches all went to Concordia. Bienz beat Meyer at first, 6-2 and 6-1. Staffeld topped Boknevitz 6-1, 6-2 at second. Martinez prevailed 6-0 and 6-2 at third over Halverson, and Gruenwald beat Rodriguez at sixth, 6-3 and 7-6 (7-4).
The afternoon match saw the visiting Falcons wrap up an undefeated conference season. The closest match came at fifth singles where Tanner Hahn outlasted McIntosh 6-3, 6-3.
Concordia will look to return five of its seven players from this year's roster. The team will bid farewell to departing seniors Staffeld and Martinez.
