Box Score Oct. 29, 2013 - A ten-minute outburst of offense was all it took this afternoon for the Concordia-Chicago men's soccer team to turn a tight contest into a season-ending 4-0 victory over the host Rockford University Regents.
The Cougars controlled the pace of play for the first 45 minutes, but the game remained scoreless as the teams reached halftime. Concordia held an 8-4 advantage in shots and a 7-1 edge in corner kick. The two best chances of the half, shots by
Taylor Nehmer (Milwaukee, WI/Milwaukee Lutheran) and
Manny Valdez (Westchester, IL/St. Joseph) were saved by Rockford goalkeeper Felipe Juarez.
The tide turned quickly with the beginning of the second half. Just 75 seconds after the break,
Joey Malme (Green Bay, WI/NEW Lutheran) netted his first career goal for a 1-0 lead.
Adam Perolio (Fort Wayne, IN/Bishop Luers) set up Malme with a precisely-placed thru ball, and Malme shot to the upper right portion of the net from about 20 yards out.
"We controlled most of the game, but we needed to work very hard to get that first goal," said head coach
Micah Middendorf. "Once Joey scored, that relaxed everybody and we were able to play our game."
Six minutes later, the lead became two on
Brendan Mullane's (Park Ridge, IL/Maine South) team-leading eighth of the season. Nehmer's pass over the top of the RU defense created a one-on-one opportunity for Mullane.
Malme struck again just 21 seconds after Mullane's goal to make it a 3-0 game. Once again, it was Nehmer setting the table as his cross from the left side gave Malme a tap-in.
Senior
Anthony Giammanco (Bartlett, IL/South Elgin H.S.) notched CUC's final goal of the game and third within a 1:33 span. Giammanco's eighth career goal was the finished product of a pair of great passes by Malme and Mullane.
The Cougars (6-13-0, 2-8-0 NACC) finished with a 16-12 advantage in shots. Goalkeeper
Roberto Aragon (Cicero, IL/Morton East) made two saves in recording his second shutout of the season.
