Oct. 15, 2013 - A familiar rivalry was renewed this evening as the Concordia-Chicago volleyball team welcomed Dominican University to Geiseman Gymnasium. The teams had seen plenty of each other last month when they each played four matches in the CUC Fall Volleyball Invitational. This time, the two hooked up for their Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference battle, and a powerful and deadly accurate Stars' hitting attack was the difference in a three-set win over the Cougars (25-14, 25-13, 25-15).
Dominican (17-9, 6-1 NACC) gave out of the starting gates quickly as their well-placed attacks put Concordia on the defensive. The Stars opened up an early lead and kept a comfortable margin throughout the set on the strength of a .577 attack (18 kills, three errors, 26 attempts). Concordia got some quality kills from
Lisa Koller (Indianapolis, IN/Indianapolis Lutheran) and
Bianca Gordon (Milwaukee, WI/Milwaukee Lutheran) but was unable to match the visitors' overall production.
In set three, the Cougars fell behind 9-1 but made a bit of a comeback. Kills by Gordon and
Katie Hannon (Chicago, IL/Queen of Peace) pulled CUC within 11-7, but the Stars' Becky Honerlaw served up seven straight points after Dominican got the ball back, and they held off any further charges from the home team.
Dominican hit .414 for the match, led by Claire Dezelski's 12 kills (.379) and Carri Chambers' 11 kills (.364). Gordon and Koller recorded six kills for Concordia. The Cougars served well for the match in recording six aces, two of them by Hannon.
The Cougars (3-15, 1-6 NACC) will host their final two home matches of the season this weekend, taking on Marian University on Friday night and Lakeland College on Saturday morning.
