Oct. 12, 2013 - Following a loss in Friday night's home match, the second half of the weekend's back-to-back matches got no easier for the Concordia Cougars this afternoon. The opponent was Edgewood College who came into the match with a perfect 5-0 record in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play. The Eagles made it 6-0 (19-6 overall) with a three-set win over the Cougars by scores of 25-12, 25-10 and 25-19.
The Cougars got off to a quick start as
Angela Hennig (Springfield, IL/Springfield Lutheran) served up four straight points including an ace. A kill by
Raven Burns )Shorewood, IL/Minooka Community) gave CUC a 9-5 lead. But Edgewood came back with a 20-3 run highlighted by Rachel Thomsen serving seven consecutive points. The Eagles finished set one with 19 kills and a .316 attack.
Another run of points by the Eagles, this one of eight straight, put the home team in control of set two as they hit .379 on 14 kills. The Cougars were limited to just six kills, three of them by
Kristin Allen (Green Valley, IL/Illini Central).
As was the case on Friday night, Concordia's best run of play came in the third set. Trailing 13-7, the Cougars rallied behind kills by
Bianca Gordon (Milwaukee, WI/Milwaukee Lutheran) and
Lisa Koller (Indianapolis, IN/Indianapolis Lutheran) plus a serving ace by
Meghan O'Hara (Sheffield Village, OH/Lutheran West) to pull within 15-13. The Cougars stayed close until a couple of consecutive hitting errors allowed the Eagles to open up a more confortable lead and pull away to the final 3-0 result.
Edgewood finished the match with 48 kills and a .324 attack, led by Jessica Martin's 13 kills and .345. Concordia (3-13, 1-4 NACC) was led by Allen and Gordon with five kills each.
The Cougars will host three matches next week beginning with Division Street rival Dominican University on Tuesday night.
