April 7, 2012 - The Concordia Cougars presented their first-year head coach Terry Farrell with his first win today, a 7-2 victory over Wisconsin Lutheran College in the second of two Northern Athletics Conference matches.
The Cougars started out by taking two of three points in doubles play. The first team of Alex Tarullo (Berwyn, IL/Morton West) and Thien Van (Berwyn, IL/Morton West) edged Lee Johnson and Matthew Rocque 8-6. Tim Staffeld (Hobart, IN/H.S.) and Vince Termini (Addison, IL/Addison Trail) won 8-3 at second over David Parez and Luke Schroeder. At third doubles, the Warriors' tandem of Jeremy Vanderhyde and Adam Breister prevailed 8-6 over Chayanne Martinez (Carpentersville, IL/Dundee-Crown) and Ronald Roman (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Wesleyan Academy).
Concordia soon pulled away by taking five of the six singles points, losing only at number one. Most notable among the Cougars' singles victories were Martinez winning a 6-4, 11-9 marathon over Vanderhyde at fifth and Adam Schoedel (St. Charles, MO/Lutheran St. Charles) over Joe Herte 6-0, 6-0 at sixth.
Earlier in the day, the Cougars came up on the short end of a 6-3 match against the Milwaukee School of Engineering. Staffeld beat Nick Matsuura 6-1, 6-0 at fourth for Concordia's lone singles point. In doubles, Tarullo and Van beat Juan Montenegro and Eric Klamrowski 8-6 at first, and Staffeld and Termini won by the same score at second over Matsuura and Jeff Scarpelli.
The Cougars (1-3, 1-2 NAC) will play at North Central College in a non-conference match on Thursday afternoon.
