April 21, 2012 - The Concordia men's tennis team returned to Wisconsin for two Northern Athletics Conference matches today and came back home as they did last weekend with a 1-1 split. The Cougars topped Marian University 7-2 in the afternoon match after falling to Edgewood College 6-3 in the early morning competition.
Against Marian, the Cougars got off to a great start by sweeping doubles. The second team of
Tim Staffeld (Hobart, IN/H.S.) and
Vince Termini (Addison, IL/Addison Trail) had the easiest time, taking an 8-0 whitewash over Andrew Bales and Joseph Bertram.
Alex Tarullo (Berwyn, IL/Morton West) and
Thien Van (Berwyn, IL/Morton West) were 8-4 winners at first over Jory Lawson and James Kapolnek while
Ronald Roman (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) and
Luis Rivera (Franklin Park, IL/East Leyden) won 8-5 at third over Mark Keller and Everett Zank.
In singles play, the Cougars' four singles victories were as follows: Tarullo 6-1, 6-2 over Kapolnek at second; Staffeld 6-0, 6-2 over Bertram at third; Termini 6-2, 6-0 over Bales at fourth, and
Adam Schoedel (St. Charles, MO/Lutheran St. Charles) 6-0, 6-2 over Zank at sixth. Van lost to Lawson 6-3, 6-0 at first, and
Chayanne Martinez (Carpentersville, IL/Dundee-Crown) fell at fifth to Keller 6-2, 1-6, 10-6.
Tarullo and Termini were both 2-0 in singles play for the day as they took points against Edgewood. Tarullo defeated Tim Morgan 6-2, 7-5 at second, and Termini won a three-set battle at fourth against Edwin Mendoza 6-1, 1-6 and 6-2. Concordia's final point came at first doubles where Tarullo and Van topped Morgan and Michael Wanta 8-4.
The Cougars (3-6, 3-4 NAC) will play at Elmhurst College on Tuesday before taking on their final two conference opponents on Saturday.
