March 23, 2012 - The Concordia-Chicago men's tennis team opened the 2012 season this evening with a 9-0 loss at the hands of Judson University in Elgin.
In doubles play, the first team of Tim Staffeld (Hobart, IN/H.S.) and Alex Tarullo (Berwyn, IL/Morton West), and the second team of Vince Termini (Addison, IL/Addison Trail) and Chayanne Martinez (Carpentersville, IL/Dundee-Crown) were both shut out 8-0. The third team of newcomers Ron Roman (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Wesleyan Academy) and Adam Schoedel (St. Charles, MO/Lutheran St. Charles) fared only slightly better, dropping an 8-2 match to Adam Westhauser and Jeff Splinter.
Tarullo, beginning his third season with the Cougars, was moved up to the number one singles position but was defeated 6-3, 6-1 by John Mittvick. Staffeld at second, and Martinez at fourth were both blanked in straight sets. Termini fell 6-1, 6-1 at third, and Schoedel at fifth and Roman at sixth lost their matches 6-1, 6-0.
The Cougars' Saturday match versus Lawrence University was cancelled and is unlikely to be rescheduled. Concordia's next match will be April 5 against Dominican University to open Northern Athletics Conference play.
