Oct. 6, 2012 - A short-handed Concordia Cougar women's soccer team found themselves pitted against a 10-2 Edgeweood College team this morning. The Cougars held down the hosts for much of the day but were unable to counter with their own attack and lost 3-0 at Edgewood's Breese Stevens Field.
The Cougars had a couple of early corner kicks and a shot by
Haley Graner (Waukesha, WI/Waukesha West) that sailed left. The Eagles gathered some momentum as the half progressed. Finally in the 42nd minute, the Eagles seized a chance when the Cougars were whistled for a foul in the box. Ashley Alonso converted the penalty kick past
Callie Hasselbring (Houston, TX/Cypress Ridge) for a 1-0 lead.
Edgewood stepped up the pace to open the second half, and their persistence paid off in the 64th minute. Elaine Gerry took a pass and moved past two defenders before firing inside the far post.
With the two-goal lead, the Eagles concentrated things on the defensive end
. Lilly Poor's (Bloomington, IN/Bloomington North) shot in the 78th minute was saved by Kristi Frisch, marking the Cougars' only real chance of the half. Edgewood then closed out the game with their third goal just 37 seconds ahead of the final horn.
Edgewood fired 22 shots to Concordia's two. Hasselbring finished with seven saves.
Concordia (4-6-0, 2-6-0 NAC) returns to action Sunday afternoon at 4:00 when they host Purdue University Calumet in non-conference play.
